Teachers often note that students struggle with the transition between core instruction and intervention in mathematics. Thus, the purpose of these curriculum crosswalks is to identify points of alignment and misalignment between commonly used mathematics intervention and core instructional materials, with a particular focus on mathematics practice standards and vocabulary. We offer recommendations for improving alignment to help students more successfully participate in math instruction across settings. In this webinar, Dr. Sarah Powell an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin highlights freely available tools and resources that can help educators consider a scope and sequence for math skills, assessment and intervention practices, instructional delivery, concepts and procedures for whole and rational numbers, intensification considerations, and more. The webinar reviews the content available from the Intensive Intervention Math Course Content. The course content consists of eight modules covering a range of math related topics. Each module includes video lessons, activities, knowledge checks, practice-based opportunities, coaching materials and other resources.
This module was adapted from a series of training modules developed by the National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) and is aimed at district or school teams involved in the initial planning for using data-based individualization (DBI) as a framework for providing intensive intervention in academics and behavior. The audience for this module may include school teams supporting academic intervention and progress monitoring in middle school mathematics.
Module 6 is the second in a set of four course modules focused on explicit instruction. This module introduces the concept of supporting practices necessary for successful implementation of explicit instruction. The module introduces how to use effective methods to elicit frequent responses. Throughout the module, educators will learn how eliciting frequent responses support instruction within the DBI framework.
In this article, Drs. Ketterlin Geller, Lembke, and Powell discuss how they are supporting educators to implement (1) the process of data-based individualization (DBI), (2) the principles of explicit and systematic instruction, and (3) key components of algebra readiness as part of Project STAIR (Supporting Teaching of Algebra: Individual Readiness).
This module is focused on the foundational skills of basic facts and computations across elementary grade levels. This module reviews the math trajectories that lead to long-term success and mastery of facts. Mastery of facts will lead to deeper understanding of facts in order to complete multi-step computations.
In Module 3 of the Intensive Intervention in Mathematics Course Content we emphasize the necessity for using evidence-based interventions or strategies as the starting point of instruction within intensive intervention. In this module, educators will learn about: (1) The umbrella term of evidence-based practices and different types of evidence-based practices; (2) Where to locate evidence-based practices; (3) How to design the instructional platform for use within intensive intervention.
This module is focused on the evidence-based strategies necessary for students to be successful in solving word problems. Specific strategies and practice of the strategies to include as part of mathematics intervention are reviewed. In this webinar, Dr. Sarah Powell an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin introduces a new free resource from NCII that can be used by faculty to develop or supplement coursework to ensure educators are prepared to support students with intensive math needs. The Intensive Intervention Math Course Content consists of eight modules covering a range of math related topics. Each module includes video lessons, activities, knowledge checks, practice-based opportunities, and more! In this webinar, Dr. Powell reviews the content available, discusses how it could be used as you develop courses, and answers questions that you might have.
An effective and efficient data system is essential for successful implementation of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). However, prior to selecting an appropriate system, schools and districts must identify what its staff and community need and what resources the district or school has to support an MTSS data system. This two-step tool can help teams to consider both what their needs are and to evaluate available tools against those needs. Step 1 can help your team systematically identify and document your MTSS data system needs and current context and step 2 focuses on selecting and evaluating a data system for conducting screening and progress monitoring within a tiered system of support based on the identified needs and context from step 1
