There are a variety of terms used interchangeably to define special education: specially-designed instruction, Tier 3 supports, and intensive intervention, but, do they mean the same thing? In this presentation, delivered at the 2017 OSEP Leadership Conference, state leaders of special education, David Sienko from the Rhode Island Department of Education and Glenna Gallo, from the Washington State Board of Education – alongside personnel from the National Center on Intensive Intervention – shared perspectives on how special education is defined to espouse commonalities across terminology and services to support students with disabilities. This is part 1 of the larger module, “Informal Academic Diagnostic Assessment: Using Data to Guide Intensive Instruction.” This part is intended to provide an overview of common general outcome measures (GOM) used for progress monitoring in reading and mathematics, with guidance on selecting an appropriate measure.
This infographic, developed in collaboration with the Rhode Island Parent Information Network, provides tips for parents in supporting their child who is receiving intensive intervention.
This infographic, developed in collaboration with the Rhode Island Parent Information Network, provides questions to ask school teams who are providing intensive intervention. This resource is intended to provide a high-level overview of intensive intervention and should not replace ongoing communication between schools, and parents and families.
This webinar addresses a challenge faced by many teachers: feeling inundated by data while struggling to find useful information to guide intervention decision-making
This webinar describes contextual factors that can support or impede the implementation of intensive intervention.
These two modules from the IRIS Center introduce users to progress monitoring in reading and mathematics. Progress monitoring is a type of formative assessment in which student learning is evaluated to provide useful feedback about performance to both learners and teachers. Because the overall progress monitoring process is almost identical for any subject area, the content in the two modules is very similar.
This IRIS Star Legacy Module explores the basic principles of behavior and the importance of discovering the reasons that students engage in problem behavior. The steps to conducting a functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and developing a behavior plan are described.
This module was adapted from a series of training modules developed by the National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) and is aimed at district or school teams involved in the initial planning for using data-based individualization (DBI) as a framework for providing intensive intervention in academics and behavior. The audience for this module may include school teams supporting academic intervention and progress monitoring in middle school mathematics.
This collection contains modules that can be used for professional development for middle school leaders, teachers, interventionists and instructional coaches to build their capacity to students who require intervention in mathematics.
