This report presents findings from an exploratory study of how five high-performing districts, which we refer to as NCII’s knowledge development sites, defined and implemented intensive intervention. The findings offer lessons that other schools and districts can use when planning for, implementing and working to sustain their own initiatives to provide intensive intervention for students with the most severe and persistent learning and/or behavioral needs.

The purpose of this module is to introduce schools interested in implementing intensive intervention to the infrastructure needed to implement data-based individualization (DBI). The module includes presentation slides with integrated activities and handouts to help teams determine their readiness and develop an action plan for implementation.
This module focuses primarily on selecting evidence-based interventions that align with the functions of behavior for students with severe and persistent learning and behavior needs. The emphasis of this training will include four main content areas: (a) relating assessment to function, (b) selecting evidence-based interventions that align with functions of behavior, (c) linking assessment and monitoring, and (d) connecting data with the evidence-based interventions selected. The overarching goal is to connect concepts and theories in behavior and begin planning how intensive intervention can be put into practice to support students with intensive behavioral needs.
There are a variety of terms used interchangeably to define special education: specially-designed instruction, Tier 3 supports, and intensive intervention, but, do they mean the same thing? In this presentation, delivered at the 2017 OSEP Leadership Conference, state leaders of special education, David Sienko from the Rhode Island Department of Education and Glenna Gallo, from the Washington State Board of Education – alongside personnel from the National Center on Intensive Intervention – shared perspectives on how special education is defined to espouse commonalities across terminology and services to support students with disabilities. This collection contains modules that can be used for professional development for middle school leaders, teachers, interventionists and instructional coaches to build their capacity to students who require intervention in mathematics. Basic Facts and Computations. Building Fluency and Conceptual Understanding: Middle School Level Connecting Intervention and Core Instruction. Instructional Strategies to Bridge Skills that Lead to Success: Middle School Level
This module is designed for interventionists, special educators, and general educators to review instructional strategies that students with mathematics difficulties need to be successful in both core instruction and intervention. Students with mathematics difficulties may make progress in intervention but still struggle in core because there is often not a bridge or support to show how the intervention connects to core. This module addresses these needs and identifies how all teachers need to support generalization and build upon mathematics trajectories for students to be successful.
This collection contains modules that can be used for professional development for elementary leaders, teachers, interventionists and instructional coaches to build their capacity to support students who require mathematics intervention.
The purpose of this module is to review how to implement the Early Numeracy Intervention, a validated intervention program that can be used for Tier 2 math intervention, or as an intensive intervention platform within DBI.
The purpose of this module is to focus on the importance of fractions, including the prerequisite skills. Fractions have been cited as a key skill that students need in order to be more successful in advanced mathematics skills, including algebra. Fractions are a necessary skill to be included as part of tiered interventions for students as early as grade 3.
This module is focused on the foundational skills of basic facts and computations across elementary grade levels. This module reviews the math trajectories that lead to long-term success and mastery of facts. Mastery of facts will lead to deeper understanding of facts in order to complete multi-step computations.
