The Progress Toward Outcomes report is an annual report summarizing NCII’s progress toward meeting project goals. This report reflects activities completed between October 2021-September 2022.
NCII was featured in the Midwest Symposium for Leadership in Behavior Disorders ReThinking Behavior Winter 2023 Issue. The article reviews the data-based individualization (DBI) process and highlights resources to support implementation that are available on the NCII website.
The NCII has established a standard process to evaluate the scientific rigor of commercially available assessments that can be used as part of a DBI process. The 2022 call for submissions for behavior screening and progress monitoring tools is NOW OPEN.
The purpose of this training is to gain foundational knowledge of how all behavior serves a purpose or function. This foundational knowledge is core to understanding behavior, supporting students with challenging behavior, and diagnosing the function of behavior and developing effective behavioral interventions. This module introduces function of behavior and provides suggestions for how you can use this understanding within the context of a data-based individualization (DBI) process. While this module briefly mentions the role of a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA), this is not the focus of this module.
The purpose of this module, Behavior Basics: Understanding Principles of Behavior, is to gain foundational knowledge of what behavior is, how behavior is defined, and what environmental factors influence behavior. This foundational knowledge is core to understanding behavior, supporting students with challenging behavior, and later, diagnosing function of behavior and developing effective behavioral interventions.
This collection of training materials can be used to provide an overview of the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity for selecting, evaluating, and intensifying interventions or to provide specific examples in reading, mathematics, and behavior. The training materials include presentation slides with suggested speaker notes and workbooks with application activities. The modules are intended to be delivered by a trained, knowledgeable professional.
This training module introduces the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity and describes how it supports the DBI process by helping provide explicit guidance on how to select and evaluate validated behavior intervention programs to best meet students’ needs and intensify or adapt those interventions when students or groups of students do not adequately respond.
This activity was developed by Michelle Silvia, reading coach at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School in Providence, Rhode Island. This lesson illustrates the use of Elkonin boxes in a virtual setting and includes three variations. Elkonin boxes are an instructional method used to build phonological awareness by segmenting words into individual sounds or phonemes. Elkonin boxes are commonly used in the early elementary grades or with students who need additional phonics interventions. This lesson includes a tip sheet as well as PowerPoint templates that can be used to support the use of Elkonin boxes in virtual settings by allowing the student to click and drag a "token" on the screen. The examples illustrate variations for use with tokens, letter tiles, and word building
This activity was developed by Etmi Lopes Martins, school psychologist at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School in Providence, Rhode Island. This lesson includes a tip sheet and a video tutorial that demonstrates how to create and implement the 5-point scale in a virtual setting. A 5-point scale is a simple social and emotional learning tool that can help students with self-management. To learn more about self-management and the 5-point scale, visit NCII’s behavioral strategy guide.
