Representing 2 + 5 with Objects
This video shows how manipulatives can be used to explain addition using a part-part-whole structure. This example has a two known parts and one unknown whole (i.e., the answer). When students are allowed to use manipulatives to solve addition problems they can practice the physical act of combining two parts and counting strategies to develop an understanding for addition and begin to develop fluency with basic facts.
