In this article, Drs. Ketterlin Geller, Lembke, and Powell discuss how they are supporting educators to implement (1) the process of data-based individualization (DBI), (2) the principles of explicit and systematic instruction, and (3) key components of algebra readiness as part of Project STAIR (Supporting Teaching of Algebra: Individual Readiness).

The National Center on Intensive Intervention and the Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports have partnered to present a webinar series focused on providing educators with tools to support secondary students during virtual learning and the return to in-person learning. This series is intended for educators at the state and local level who work with students with intensive behavioral needs in secondary school settings. Webinar 1: Check and Connect: Implementation and Adaptation in a Virtual Environment At the core of Check & Connect is a trusting relationship between the student and a caring, trained mentor who both advocates for and challenges the student to keep education salient. Relationships are more important than ever given that current status of education and ongoing virtual learning.
The purpose of this guide is to provide brief explanations of key practices that can be implemented when working with students in need of intensive intervention in mathematics. Special education instructors, math interventionists, and others working with students who struggle with mathematics may find this guide helpful. Strategies presented in this guide should be used in conjunction with teaching guides developed for specific mathematical concepts.
Research indicates that for successful implementation to occur, it is important to look at not only what is being implemented but how it is implemented. Implementing DBI often necessitates that educators make school-wide instructional adaptations, engage in systematic data analysis, and conduct individualized student-level decisions at levels that task the bandwidth of resources, staffing, and budgets of many schools. Assessing readiness from multiple stakeholders with different perspectives prior to implementation allows educators across many levels (schools, districts, and states) to prioritize areas for their initial efforts and then slowly use the momentum to build capacity toward full implementation. In this section, find training materials, lessons learned from those who have implemented DBI, and tools to assess your initial readiness and build capacity to implement intensive intervention.
In this Voices from the Field post, we archive the presentations from day 3 of the NCII 10-year celebration of the implementation of intensive intervention. On this day, panelists shared stories focused on improving outcomes for students through DBI implementation.
The National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) is excited to celebrate 10 years of building capacity at the state, district, school, teacher, and university level to support implementation of intensive intervention. We had a wonderful celebration June 7-9, 2021 hearing from educators, state and local leaders, researchers, professional development providers, and faculty. What amazing and inspiring stories!
