It is important that the instructional practices and interventions delivered within a school’s multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) be grounded in evidence. However, the “practice” that happens within each tier is different; therefore, the type of evidence that is required for each tier also must be different. A useful way to think about evidence-based practices in MTSS is to think about levels of evidence that vary and correspond to the different levels of intervention intensity at each tier. The Academic Progress Monitoring Tools Chart is comprised of evidence-based progress monitoring tools that can be used to assess students’ academic performance, to quantify a student rate of improvement or responsiveness to instruction, and to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction. The chart displays ratings on technical rigor of performance level standards (reliability and validity) and growth standards (sensitivity, alternate forms, and decision rules) and provides information on the whether a bias analysis was conducted, and key usability features. The chart is intended to assist educators and families in becoming informed consumers who can select academic progress monitoring tools that address their specific needs. The presence of a particular tool on the chart does not constitute endorsement and should not be viewed as a recommendation from either the TRC on Academic Progress Monitoring or NCII.
This video shows how to use the set model to represent the fraction 3/4 with two-colored counting chips and clips. Individual chips within the set, represent the fractional parts. It is important that students be exposed to the set model because fractions in real-world settings are often represented this way.
This video demonstrates how to use fraction circles to help students compare the value of several fractions with different numerators and denominators. The use of direct modeling with concrete manipulatives, such as fractions circles, allows students to develop conceptual understanding of fractions before they attempt to compare fractions without concrete manipulatives or pictorial representations. After students have had multiple opportunities to practice comparing fractions with concrete manipulatives, they may be ready to use other strategies such as mental images and reasoning strategies.
The Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity (Fuchs, Fuchs, & Malone, 2017) can be used to select or evaluate an intervention platform used as the validated intervention platform or the foundation of the DBI process. This activity was developed by Tammy Moran a special education teacher in Ferris Independent School District. In this lesson, she illustrates the use of the Understand-Plan-Solve-Evaluate (UPSE) Method. This method is a problem-solving strategy that can be used to support students struggling with word problems. The lesson can be used synchronously or asynchronously and does not require using multiple platforms. This collection includes a tip sheet, a video example, slides to facilitate the lesson, a UPSE template, and reflection questions.
The Academic Intervention Taxonomy Briefs provide educators with information they can use to evaluate the appropriateness of academic interventions available on the academic intervention tools chart for a specific student or group of students who require intervention. The information included in the briefs is organized along the seven dimensions of the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity
