The Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity (Fuchs, Fuchs, & Malone, 2017) can be used to select or evaluate an intervention platform used as the validated intervention platform or the foundation of the DBI process. It can also be used to guide the adaptation of intensification of an intervention during the intervention adaptation step of the DBI process. The Taxonomy includes the following dimensions:

This two page handout defines the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity through guiding questions and highlights when the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity can be used within the data-based individualization (DBI) process. Teams can use the dimensions to evaluate a current intervention, select a new intervention and intensify interventions when students do not respond.
This webinar demonstrates how the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity can support educators in systematically selecting and modifying intensive literacy interventions based on student need.
The Academic Intervention Taxonomy Briefs provide educators with information they can use to evaluate the appropriateness of academic interventions available on the academic intervention tools chart for a specific student or group of students who require intervention. The information included in the briefs is organized along the seven dimensions of the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity
This webinar demonstrates how the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity can support educators in systematically selecting and modifying intensive behavior intervention based on student need.
This webinar introduces the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity as a method for systematically selecting an intensive intervention and guide teachers through modifying the intervention based on student need.
This webinar introduces the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity as a method for systematically selecting an intensive intervention and guide teachers through modifying the intervention based on student need.
This rubric uses descriptors of the dimensions of the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity to support teams in selecting and evaluating validated interventions for small groups or individual students. Teams may consider using data available on the National Center on Intensive Intervention Academic Tools Chart and the publishers’ websites as well as results from previous implementation efforts. Each dimension will be rated on a scale of 0– Fails to Address Standard to 3 – Addresses Standard Well. In this webinar, NCII’s Caitlyn Majeika and Aleksis Kincaid provide an overview of the Academic Intervention Taxonomy Briefs and describe how they can help teachers design productive intervention programs for students with intensive academic needs. Presenters share how educators can use information from the briefs to understand the strengths and weaknesses of an intervention based on the dimensions of the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity; evaluate the appropriateness of interventions on the academic intervention tools chart; and guide decisions about the selection or purchase of a new intervention. In addition, Kim St. Martin, Director of MiMTSS, shares how Michigan schools and MiMTSS staff have used the briefs to review academic interventions.
If you are like most educators, you agree with the idea of providing intensive intervention for students with the most intractable academic and behavior problems. The question you may be asking is, how do I find the time? This guide includes strategies that educators can consider when trying to determine how to find the time for this intensification within the constraints of busy school schedules. Supplemental resources, planning questions, and example schedules are also provided.
