This collection highlights a sampling of articles focused on intensive intervention and data-based individualization (DBI). Although there is a wealth of research on key components of the DBI process (e.g., progress monitoring, validated intervention programs), this list is not intended to include articles that focus on specific steps in the DBI process, nor is it an exhaustive review of all available literature. In the list below, we highlight seminal research on DBI and articles published since 2011, when NCII was first funded.

NCII, through a collaboration with the University of Connecticut, developed a set of course content focused on developing educators’ skills in designing and delivering intensive mathematics instruction. This content is designed to support faculty and professional development providers with instructing pre-service and in-service educators who are developing and/or refining their implementation of intensive mathematics intervention
The purpose of this guide is to provide brief explanations of key practices that can be implemented when working with students in need of intensive intervention in mathematics. Special education instructors, math interventionists, and others working with students who struggle with mathematics may find this guide helpful. Strategies presented in this guide should be used in conjunction with teaching guides developed for specific mathematical concepts.
In this webinar, Dr. Sarah Powell an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin introduces a new free resource from NCII that can be used by faculty to develop or supplement coursework to ensure educators are prepared to support students with intensive math needs. The Intensive Intervention Math Course Content consists of eight modules covering a range of math related topics. Each module includes video lessons, activities, knowledge checks, practice-based opportunities, and more! In this webinar, Dr. Powell reviews the content available, discusses how it could be used as you develop courses, and answers questions that you might have.
NCII, through a collaboration with the University of Connecticut, developed a set of course content focused on developing educators’ skills in designing and delivering behavior support in intensive intervention. This content is designed to support faculty and professional development providers with instructing pre-service and in-service educators who are developing and/or refining their implementation of behavior support in intensive intervention.
If you are like most educators, you agree with the idea of providing intensive intervention for students with the most intractable academic and behavior problems. The question you may be asking is, how do I find the time? This guide includes strategies that educators can consider when trying to determine how to find the time for this intensification within the constraints of busy school schedules. Supplemental resources, planning questions, and example schedules are also provided.
These videos and tips are part of a series of products to support students with intensive needs in the face of COVID-19. These videos illustrate how parents and grandparents can implement the NCII reading and mathematics sample lessons to provide additional practice. In addition to the video examples, a tip sheet is available to help parents implement the lessons. Implementation of Reading Lesson: Parent Example
In this webinar, Dr. Sarah Powell an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin highlights freely available tools and resources that can help educators consider a scope and sequence for math skills, assessment and intervention practices, instructional delivery, concepts and procedures for whole and rational numbers, intensification considerations, and more. The webinar reviews the content available from the Intensive Intervention Math Course Content. The course content consists of eight modules covering a range of math related topics. Each module includes video lessons, activities, knowledge checks, practice-based opportunities, coaching materials and other resources.
This video and tips are part of a series of products to support students with intensive needs in the face of COVID-19. The series illustrates how educators can implement the NCII reading and mathematics sample lessons through virtual learning and provide tips for there use. These lessons provide short instructional routines to encourage multiple practice opportunities using explicit instruction principles. Tips for how educators can share these lessons with parents and families and video examples of family members implementing the lessons to enhance practice opportunities are also available.
During Spring 2020, educators quickly adapted to providing interventions and collecting data virtually despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents were critical partners in supporting opportunities for students with intensive needs to practice and receive feedback and sharing what was working and when changes are needed. While the context and environment may have changed, the focus on providing high-quality interventions with validated practices, monitoring student progress, and adapting and intensifying supports based on student data continues to be applicable across virtual, in-person, or hybrid models. Many of these materials were developed to support educators and families during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they can be used to support virtual delivery of intensive intervention for students in virtual learning programs, as a result of adverse weather events, or to extend practice opportunities and learning at home.
